Meetings 7 and 8

Here are the Minutes from Meeting 7.

Two particularly important things came out of this meeting. The first was the realisation that there were a large number of people present at the meeting who had not previously attended meetings of the IWB Network and that it may be appropriate for us to revisit some of the ideas that we have discussed previously. The second was the pressure that some members of the group felt under to justify the cost of the IWB as a resource. We resolved that the focus for Meeting 8 would be to discuss what particular value the IWB can bring to maths teaching and learning.

In Meeting 8 (on 8th Dec at Chesterton) we spent a very productive session producing a document that is beginning to collate the different ways in which an IWB can be used. This is a work-in-progress and we were less worried about which box particular ideas went in than in getting a good collection of ideas together. In future meetings we hope to add to and refine this document and to provide exemplar files that demonstrate each mode of use.

The "modes of use" document is here.

Here are the minutes of Meeting 8
.

The next meeting will take place on Monday 2nd February, from 4:30pm to 6pm at Sawston Village College (thanks to Lily Gibbs for offering to host this meeting). All maths teachers in Cambs (and beyond!) are welcome.

Best wishes,
Mark

Meeting 6 - Resources

Meeting 6 took place at Linton Village College on 25th June (thanks Will!)
We added some links to the list (below right) and focused on data handling topics.
There are only a few links and files from this meeting but there was lots of interesting discussion. More is recorded in the minutes of the meeting.

Next year there will be 6 meetings (one each half term). The dates for these will be published shortly. The focus for the next meeting will be "KS3 Rich Tasks".

Interactivities from nrich:
http://nrich.maths.org/public/viewer.php?obj_id=5932 – shows distributions of 100 dice rolls against the theoretical version
http://nrich.maths.org/public/viewer.php?obj_id=1258 – the game of ‘Pig’ (essentially ‘Pass the Pigs’ but with ordinary dice)
http://nrich.maths.org/public/viewer.php?obj_id=6012 – try to produce a random-looking series of heads and tails. This is time-consuming …
http://nrich.maths.org/public/viewer.php?obj_id=5864 – three-in-a-row game involving calculating with negative numbers

Meeting 6

Meeting 6 of the IWB Network will take place at Linton Village College on Weds 25th June from 4:30 to 6pm.
The curriculum focus is Data Handling.
Please bring websites that work well with an IWB to add to our list.

All Maths Teachers in Cambs are welcome to attend the meeting.

Meeting 5 - Resources

Meeting 5 took place on Tuesday 15th April 2008 at Comberton Village College.
We added websites to the list on this blog (right-hand side) and shared some file from Using & Applying Maths topics. The files are below.
On my computer, for the files to download correctly the filenames need to end in ".flp", or ".notebook". I click on the file, then select "Save As" and change the filename that the computer suggests so it looks the same as it does on the list below (eg "Buses.flp", rather than "Buses").
This seems to solve the problem!

Buses.flp
Plants2.flp
Practical Trees.flp
classify 2d shapes planets.notebook
Architecture and Mathematics.notebook
Asnat's rabbits.notebook
The Maths Teacher's Cross.notebook
